MZ34 Reed & Carb Adapter Plate Mods

Since the engine was mounted to run inverted, the carburetor adapter plate and the reed valve mounting assembly were modified to enable tapping a hole above the reed valve assembly for the fuel pump pulse line. Also, the vaccum line tap to the compression release valve had to be rotated to prevent oil and fuel from entering the line.

To make the fuel pump pulse line connection, a small brake line banjo fitting was modified to accept the pulse line hose. Also, to reconnect the compression release line valve, a small diameter steel brake line was bent and one end inserted into a horizontal hole drilled into the adapter to reach the original port. A through hole was drilled a cross the tube to make the flow connection. A metric set screw was used to hold the tube end in place and JB Weld was used to seal around the outside OD.

The nice thing about a banjo connector is the freedom to rotate the nipple and it does not require much space. In this case it permits the use of a very short pulse line.

The original engine pulse line port was plugged.

Two safety wire clamps will be used on the pulse line.

Here one can see the routing of the compression release line. A clamp on the lower left hand bolt secures the line to prevent vibration from breaking the JB Weld seal at the point the line enters the adapter.

Two safety wire clamps will be used on the compression release line.

To make an oil free pulse line connection, a hole was located and drilled through both the carburetor adapter plate and reed valve mounting plate so that the pulse line pressure source came from above the reed valves with the engine inverted. One of the original gaskets could be modified and used between the reed valve assembly and the engine, but a new gasket had to be formed to ensure tap continuity between the reed assembly and the carburetor adapter plate. The hole drilled through the carburetor adapter plate was enlarged and tapped to match the banjo fitting bolt.
