Cool Weather Flying - Neelyville, Missouri - May 15, 2004
Two hundred and fourteen mile round trip from Perryville Municipal Airport (K02). I believe I was getting ready for the return flight. Neck sock, old hooded sweat shirt, leather jacket and what can not be seen is a vest under the sweat shirt. Soft flying helmet is on the seat, and the gloves are on the floor boards. When flying, the cap goes under the seat cushion. I can stay warm but the drag profile goes up with colder weather. Attending a flyin at a private strip. Stopped for gas at Painton, Missouri. I was desperate to get away from the airport as winter and spring weather had not been cooperative. Normally I fly at least 2,000 feet agl so that if the engine goes silent, I can coast about two miles to some suitable landing spot. On this day there was low cloud cover, and I flew at about 750 feet agl with an air temperature of 55 degrees F. This was the first time the FireFly had been away from the K02 area since 11/08/2003.
